History

The first owner of the Manor of Lowick was Ivo de Taillebois in 1091. Ivo was a Norman baron who had come to England with William the Conqueror and was a friend of the latter's son, William Rufus.

The existing house dates from the late sixteenth century and is based on the westernmost of the pele towers. In the 1740's a Georgian main block was built, to which was added a sandstone porch in the 1880's.

Many Cumbrian families followed de Taillebois as owners, including Towers, Ambrose, Blencow, Everard, Montagu and Calvert. The hall and manor was never sold however, until after the Second World War, but descended by inheritance through nephews, nieces and cousins. In 1948 it was purchased by Arthur Ransome, the author of 'Swallows and Amazons', and his wife Eugenia.

The current owners have published an illustrated history of the house.
